A FISH STORY 2/17/2022
I was sitting on the bench by Richardson Bay quietly photographing gulls serenely floating on the water...
All at once there was a commotion... a cacophony... a disturbance in the force....
A dozen or so gulls (There's no such thing as a seagull—the correct term is simply “gull," because gulls don't live exclusively near the sea) decided to take flight... Instinctively I panned and begin to track them as that always makes for cool pix...
What I didn't realize until now as I was processing a rather large file of pix..... was that the lead gull had a fish in his mouth, and in typical fashion.... the rest of the flock was bound and determined to wrest it from his beak at any cost...
What ensued was a chase and dramatic mid-air dogfight.... The lead gull hung on through acrobatic twists, turns and change of direction... At some point near the end it appears he must have given up his dinner, although the rest of the gulls chasing might not have gotten the memo... Ultimately he made a solo flight home...........
