A VISIT TO TREASURE ISLAND 9/12/2012
When is the last time you went to Treasure Island? (if ever at all) I had a photo project there this morning, so I spent a little time touring around... Not what I expected... Jewel in the Bay... Diamond in the rough... Superfund Clean Up Site...
Some kind of yet unpublicized (and unspoken) radioactive, hazardous waste left over from the Navy, has half the Island cordoned off. What remains, resembles an wasteland of abandoned, old, deteriorated, derelict industrial buildings and barracks, some of which has been moderately redeveloped (overstated) as low income housing. Playgrounds and children live across the street from fenced off areas, with signs showing the nuclear warning symbol that say 'Radiologically Controlled Area', and 'Genetic Reclamation Zone'. The beautiful art deco admin building, and the pristine Ave of The Palms entryway to the island, bely the underbelly plethora of abandoned buildings, with broken windows, chain link fence, and barbed wire. I was remiss in not photographing enough of them, as they dominate the landscape there. I am going to do some research on this little known piece of earth, that millions of people pass over each day on their commute across the Bay Bridge.
