IN MEMORY OF GREG ROBINSON 11/18/1978
Sunday, 11/18/2018, is the 40th anniversary of the Jonestown Massacre. It is one of those days in history, like the Kennedy assasination... you remember exactly where you were, and what you were doing. The Jonestown Massacre, which had a death toll of 918 people, was the most deadly single non-natural disaster in U.S. history until September 11, 2001. The Jonestown Massacre also remains the only time in history in which a U.S. Congressman (Leo Ryan) was killed in the line of duty (a week later, Dan White shot and killed Mayor George Moscone, and SF Supervisor Harvey Milk in SF City Hall) I was 29 years old... Greg Robinson was one of my dear friends at that time. He was a year or two younger than I, and had already embarked upon a successful career as a professional photojournalist with the San Francisco Examiner. He, along with several others, was killed on the airstrip in Guayana. Greg is one of the single most influential reasons I became a photojournalist. He was a great friend and mentor.
